Samba Laranja: the Syracuse University Brazilian Ensemble will return for its third appearance at Jazz at Lincoln Center with two shows on Friday, Jan. 27, at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., and on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The performances, which will feature popular and folk music from Brazil, will be held in the atrium and serve as pre-concert music for Grammy-nominated Brazilian vocalist Luciana Souza. Formed in 2001 and based in the Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music in the (VPA), Samba Laranja consists of undergraduate and graduate students from a wide variety of studies at SU. The ensemble combines voice and percussion to perform several styles of Brazilian music, with an emphasis on samba, samba-reggae, forró, bossa nova, the music of Capoeira and MPB (Brazilian popular music). The group won a 2011 Syracuse Area Music Award (SAMMY) in the category Best Recording, Other Styles, for its second and most recent album, “Native Orange” (Syracuse University Recordings). Setnor School faculty members Elisa Macedo Dekaney and Joshua Dekaney lead Samba Laranja, which previously performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center in 2009 and 2010.
