Aesthetic Apparatus, the Minneapolis-based design studio founded by Dan Ibarra and Michael Byzewski, will give a talk on Tuesday, March 27, at 6:30 p.m. in Shemin Auditorium in the Dorothea Ilgen Shaffer Art Building. The free, public lecture is sponsored by the printmaking program as part of the Department of Art’s Visiting Artist Lecture Series in Syracuse University’s .
Aesthetic Apparatus will also be in residence at SU March 26-28 creating a large-format edition of screen prints with the printmaking program and Lake Effect Editions, the program’s press.
Ibarra and Byzewski first met in 1998 as designers at Planet Propaganda in Madison, Wis. Combining their mutual interest in printmaking and music, they began to build a groundwork of limited edition, hand-printed concert posters that gained them enough national and international recognition to convince them to move to Minneapolis in 2002 and turn their hobby into a full-time graphic design studio.
Aesthetic Apparatus has created work for such clients as Blue Q, Stella Artois, HarperCollins, the American Cancer Society and Criterion Collection, as well as such bands as Cake, Frank Black, Spoon, the Hold Steady, the New Pornographers, Dinosaur Jr., Grizzly Bear and more. Their work has been featured in Print, Step Into Design, Communication Arts, Creative Review, HOW, Rolling Stone, Swindle, Jane Magazine and ReadyMade Magazine, along with various design book publications and the Chronicle Books rock art bible “Art of Modern Rock.”
For more information about the lecture, contact Dusty Herbig, assistant professor of printmaking, at dtherbig@syr.edu.
