Syracuse University radio station WAER plans to add some soulful sounds to the celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month in April. A concert by modern jazz artist Tia Fuller will take place Sunday, April 28, at the Palace Theater in Eastwood.
Fuller is best known for her work with artists including Beyonce, T.S. Monk (son of jazz musician Thelonious Monk) and local artist Nancy Kelly, among others.
Jazz Appreciation Month was founded in 2001 by John Edward Hasse, curator of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. In 2003, Congress officially acknowledged the celebration, encouraging the development of programs and events that “explore, perpetuate and honor jazz as a national and world treasure.”
“Unlike many major urban areas in the country, Syracuse is fortunate to have a radio station dedicated to preserving the legacy of jazz”, according to WAER station manager Joe Lee. Lee also says this is a great time to enjoy the genre, which according to Lee is “not widely appreciated and celebrated in America, its birthplace.”
The concert is sponsored in part by Seneca Federal Savings and Loan; National Grid; and University College of Syracuse University. Tickets are $20, or $15 with a WAER membership card or SU I.D., and can be purchased online at invite.syr.edu/waerjam, or by calling 443-4834.
