The Near West Side Initiative (NWSI) through the Syracuse University Office of Community Engagement and Economic Development is seeking applications from regional artists for the SALTQuarters Artist-in-Residence program.
SALTQuarters was established in 2013 by the NWSI through funding from ArtPlace, a national foundation focused on creative placemaking. SALTQuarters is a creative hub for artistic endeavors that engage with the Near Westside community. The SALTQuarters Artist-in-Residence program provides a six-month home for local artists interested in interacting with the and creating public artwork within the Near Westside neighborhood.
The selected artist will receive a $15,000 materials budget; an apartment and a dedicated studio space to be shared with a national artist-in-residence selected by Professor Marion Wilson and her team at 601 Tully, a neighborhood arts center created by Syracuse University students on Syracuse’s Near Westside.
Applications are open to artists working in a variety of media, with a particular focus and interest in community-based artwork. Preference will be given to artists with an interest in being immersed in and involved with the surrounding community for the duration of the residency. Artists who want to create work in conjunction with local community members and other artists and arts organizations and create work and installations that can be viewed by the general public will be preferred.
The residency will begin on July 1. For more information or to download an application, visit . The deadline to submit applications is March 15.
SaltQuarters is curated and managed by Stacey Lindbloom, a Syracuse University Engagement Scholar, working for the Near West Side Initiative. Through the Engagement Scholar program, Syracuse University students have the opportunity to work with local organizations part-time while working on a graduate degree.
