Syracuse University will honor students, faculty, staff and community partners who embody SU’s commitment to engagement with the local community with the 2014 Chancellor’s Award for Public Engagement and Scholarship (CAPES). The awards will be given at a ceremony on Wednesday, April 23, at 5:30 p.m. in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium in Newhouse 3, with a reception immediately following. The deadline for nomination submissions has been extended to Wednesday, March 12.
First presented in 1992, the award developed out of an interest among students working with SU Students for United Way to honor their fellow classmates for their contributions to the community. SU students, faculty and staff engage in thousands of hours of community-based work in the Syracuse community, the Central New York region and the world. The Chancellor’s Award for Public Engagement and Scholarship recognizes commitment to the public good.
“The robust engagement work SU students, faculty and staff are involved with locally, regionally and globally are celebrated at the CAPES event,” says Pamela Kirwin Heintz, associate vice president and director of the Shaw Center. “We thank our community partners for the time and energy they commit to SU here and around the globe, helping us all learn about and better understand the complexities in our world. More importantly, they teach us how to partner and engage with community to build capacity and explore solutions. Their commitment helps us all construct experiences and learning that would not be possible alone.”
Nominations for CAPES 2014 are available online at , at all college deans’ offices or in the Shaw Center at 237 Schine Student Center.
