Syracuse University will present a screening of the documentary film “Never Forget: Public Memory & 9/11” on Wednesday, Oct. 1, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Watson Theatre in the Robert B. Menschel Media Center. The screening is free and open to the University community.
The film, an official selection in both the 2014 Louisville International Film Festival and the Gig Harbor Film Festival, examines the ways in which the past invades and shapes the present. Beginning with interviews with people who experienced 9/11 as volunteers at Ground Zero and building to those who experienced the attacks on television throughout the world, the film explores the ways that “we” never forget.
We live in a world where history seems like an “accurate” depiction of the past; “Never Forget” challenges that assumption. Through an examination of the role of 9/11, 10 years after the attacks, the film explores how the relationships among individual memory, memorials, education, history, media and politics shape our understandings of the past in the present.
“Never Forget” is produced and directed by Living Text Productions, a scholarly pursuit dedicated to exploring a variety of current topics through interpersonal interactions, reflections and documentary film. View the trailer at: .
The screening is co-sponsored by the (VPA); the Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies in VPA; the Humanities Center; the Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration (PARCC); the ; the Department of History in the ; and the Writing Program.
