Pan Am 103 victims, Lockerbie Scholar will be remembered during Dec. 21 service at Syracuse University’s Place of Remembrance December 20, 2002Kelly Homan Rodoskikahoman@syr.edu
The chaplains of Syracuse University’s Hendricks Chapel will conduct a memorial service on Saturday, Dec. 21, at 2:03 p.m. in the chapel’s Noble Room to honor those who died aboard Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, on the same date 14 years ago.
Andrew McClune, a Syracuse University Lockerbie Scholar who died Dec. 13 as the result of a fall, will also be remembered during the service.
Father Tim Mulligan, OFM Conv., Roman Catholic co-chaplain, will lead the service. Also participating will be the Rev. Thomas V. Wolfe, dean of Hendricks Chapel; Sister Patricia Larkin, OSF, Roman Catholic co-chaplain; the Rev. Kathryn Bell, Interdenominational Protestant chaplain and the Rev. T.E. Koshy, Evangelical chaplain.
Following the service in Hendricks Chapel, those in attendance will proceed to the Place of Remembrance, located in front of the Hall of Languages.
McClune will be remembered through special prayers, the lighting of a candle and the laying of a red rose at the Place of Remembrance.
The Chaplains Council of Hendricks Chapel holds the memorial service each Dec. 21 at 2:03 p.m., the exact time of the crash of Pan Am Flight 103 in Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988. Thirty-five SU students returning from a semester of study abroad were lost on that flight.
“We want to significantly reiterate the relationship between the people of Lockerbie and Syracuse University,” says Wolfe. “We have shared so much history and so much loss. We also share our grief over the recent loss of Andrew McClune.”
McClune came to study at SU this fall through the Lockerbie Scholars Program. The program was established to create a lasting and constructive alliance between Lockerbie and Syracuse and to honor their mutual regard.
