Professors and practitioners have been chosen to launch the first projects for “Enitiative” — the Syracuse Campus-Community Entrepreneurship Initiative — which connects campus and community organizations by providing entrepreneurship grants to fund ideas for revitalizing Central New York in the areas of technology, neighborhoods and the arts. The projects are made possible by a grant awarded to SU from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.

The “eProfessors” and “ePractitioners” have been selected from campuses and organizations in Central New York and will play significant leadership roles in teaching, research and service within their respective disciplines. The eProfessors and ePractitioners will engage in entrepreneurship projects that involve faculty, students and community members. They will serve two-year terms, and each will receive a maximum of $20,000 to support their Enitiative project.

A five-year, $3 million Kauffman Campuses Initiative endowment is enabling the Enitiative coalition of committed academic and community partners to incorporate entrepreneurship into every facet of advancing SU’s Scholarship in Action vision throughout Central New York. The following ePractitioners and eProfessors have been named:

Nasir Ali, ePractitionerGreater Syracuse Chamber of CommerceAli will help launch The Seed Capital Fund of CNY, LLC (SCF), which will assist start-up companies in Central New York by providing management skills and early-stage funding. The fund’s primary goal is to help entrepreneurs define and shape ideas into ventures that can develop into successful companies, creating wealth and jobs for the region.

Dennis Connors, ePractitionerCurator of History, Onondaga Historical AssociationConnors will work with Syracuse University students to publish a 20-page history of Syracuse’s West Side neighborhood. The booklet will combine text and images reflecting the architecture, industrial and entrepreneurial heritage, and ethnic legacies of the area using historic resource material from the Onondaga Historical Association. The goal is to appeal to artists who might relocate to the area and to promote pride in the neighborhood for current residents.

Julia Czerniak, eProfessorSchool of Architecture, Syracuse UniversityAs director of UPSTATE: A Center for Design, Research and Real Estate, Czerniak will guide a group of architectural students to the Netherlands to view some of the world’s most progressive models of urban design and meet the architects, landscape architects and city officials who created them. In Syracuse, these students will translate this innovative work into the context of the post-industrial American city.

Steve Davis, eProfessorS.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse UniversityDavis will lead the South Side Newspaper Project, a joint venture between Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and the South Side Community Coalition. A community newspaper will be created to share news, events, history and happenings from the perspective of Syracuse’s South Side residents. Community members and student journalists will be trained and employed as writers, photographers and graphic artists, and the newspaper will be turned over to community members to be operated as a self-sustaining enterprise.

Norman Faiola, eProfessorCollege of Human Services and Health Professions (HSHP), Syracuse UniversityFaiola will develop a new college-wide course designed to prepare HSHP graduates to view their professional expertise as a springboard for small business creation or as inspiration for new technology solutions to existing problems in their work world. Long-term plans include the creation of a new Center for Food, Health and Nutrition — located in downtown Syracuse — to provide community members training, counseling and professional development in the areas of food, health and nutrition through faculty, supervised students and professional staff of HSHP.

Jill Hurst-Wahl, ePractitionerFounder, Hurst Associates Ltd.Hurst-Wahl will launch a CEO Discussion Series, held at various Syracuse locations, in which Central New York CEOs will share their experience with aspiring business people in the community.

Can Isik, eProfessorL.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, Syracuse UniversityIsik will lead a team of seven faculty members to develop and deliver “Environment, Energy, Technology, and Entrepreneurship,” a course that will serve as an educational outreach for activities in environmental and energy systems supported by the Syracuse Center of Excellence (CoE) in Environmental and Energy Systems.

James Kelly, eProfessorSchool of Business, Morrisville State CollegeKelly will oversee Morrisville’s new bachelor’s degree program in entrepreneurship and small business management. He will develop curriculum, advise students and participate in hiring new faculty for the program. Kelly will also teach three entrepreneurship courses, including “The Entrepreneurial Process” (the gateway course in the new program), “Entrepreneurship” and “Legal Issues for the Entrepreneur.”

Karl Klein, eProfessorOnondaga Community College (OCC)Klein will create an interdisciplinary survey course in the computer studies department at OCC to prepare students for careers in the exciting, rapidly changing and increasingly interconnected world of energy, technology and the environment. The course will have a strong entrepreneurship component to provide students with skills needed to start a small business in this rapidly growing field. OCC’s Small Business Development Center will provide information and assistance with the creation and preparation of business plans and sources of funding/capital.

Gary Lim, eProfessorSUNY College of Environmental Science and ForestryLim will develop a new workshop series on green entrepreneurship for professionals, infuse green entrepreneurship into current and planned continuing professional education programs through a portfolio of green E-ship case studies, and enhance linkages among and between academic and professionally focused curricular and co-curricular activities.

Edward Lipson, eProfessorThe College of Arts and Sciences, Syracuse UniversityLipson will develop a new course, “Entrepreneurship and Human-Computer Interface Applications,” to involve students in creative projects using electronic and software tools for applications in environmental and energy systems and in assistive technology for individuals with physical disabilities. Lipson will work closely with the Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems and the Burton Blatt Institute.

Tom Paczkowski, eProfessorCayuga Community CollegeCayuga Community College, the Stardust Foundation, The Fred L. Emerson Foundation and state Sen. Michael Nozzolio have combined forces to create the Stardust Institute for Entrepreneurship in Auburn to serve as a stimulus for economic and social development. Paczkowski will develop an Incubator Center, launch a Student Enterprise Competition, create a scholarship in entrepreneurship funded by a local entrepreneur and a CNY Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame, and explore entrepreneurial programming opportunities with public schools.

Laura Reeder, ePractitionerExecutive Director, Partners for Arts EducationPartners for Arts Education will be working with Imagining America to create a cultural incubator that does for the arts and cultural sector what technological incubators do for practitioners and students in the technology field. She will institute a program in which people at any stage in developing artistic and cultural expertise can identify how to make a life and a living in these fields, ideally in Central New York. A combination workshop/interdisciplinary seminar series will be established to provide a way for people to continue to expand their skill set.

David Rezak, eProfessorCollege of Visual and Performing Arts, Syracuse UniversityRezak will enhance the Soyars Leadership Lecture Series, which puts top level music executives in direct contact with students by attracting prominent speakers and opening events at partner campuses to students and community members. He will acquire cutting-edge subscription services currently in use in the music industry so that students in experiential learning classes can gain practical, real-time experience in digital distribution, e-commerce and touring.

Frank Ridzi, eProfessorLe Moyne CollegeRidzi will develop a new entrepreneurship course in the sociology department at Le Moyne College. “Human Services Caseload Management — Theory and Service Learning” will provide an introduction to human services caseload management, as well as to the processes, skill base and understanding involved in social entrepreneurship in the human services workplace. He will also coordinate a lecture series on social entrepreneurship.

Dominic Robinson, ePractitionerDirector, Northside CollaboratoryRobinson will lead the Northside Asset Development Initiative (NADI) in identifying individuals with significant personal strengths, working with them to overcome their barriers to economic viability, and linking them to employers who will benefit from their skills and talents. NADI will develop a network of social business ventures within Franciscan Collaborative Ministries, which will provide employment and/or training, generate income to supplement the project, and provide opportunities for Le Moyne College student participation.

Eileen Strempel, eProfessorThe College of Arts and Sciences, Syracuse UniversityStrempel is the director of strategic planning for a new master’s degree program in arts administration/arts leadership being launched at SU. As an eProfessor, Strempel will ensure that the program’s curriculum will be infused with entrepreneurship, foster student internships that bring “intellectual entrepreneurs” into local arts organizations, and embody both entrepreneurial theory and best practices while simultaneously benefiting local arts organizations and their communities.

Johan Wiklund, eProfessorMartin J. Whitman School of Management, Syracuse UniversityWiklund will focus on entrepreneurship research. His research interests include small business growth, the decision to be self-employed, new venture creation and corporate entrepreneurship.

Bill Williams, ePractitionerVice President of Construction Management, Allied Environmental Inc.Williams will work with Scott Ruff, assistant professor in the SU School of Architecture, to develop the Builders Teaching Builders Partnership. This program will train laborers and supervisors, giving them the opportunity for gainful employment and the ability to become productive members of the local economy, while bringing real-world experience and the notion of entrepreneurship to architecture students. Ruff will create a new design/build course in which students will rehabilitate a building on Syracuse’s South Side, providing students with insight into starting a new business venture.

Ronald Wright, eProfessorDepartment of Business Administration, Le Moyne CollegeWright will develop “Management Consulting,” a new course that provides exposure to basic consulting skills relevant to any internal or external management consulting experience. The course emphasis will be on the skills needed to effectively participate in entrepreneurial neighborhood consulting projects.
