The Queering Education Research Institute (QuERI), an independent think-tank and research initiative affiliated with the Syracuse University School of Education’s Cultural Foundations of Education Department, will host two events at SU’s Joseph I. Lubin House in New York City on Nov. 12—a graduate student roundtable from 1-5 p.m., and a website launch party from 6-9 p.m., to promote awareness of LGBTQ issues in education and expand the mission of QuERI. SU students, alumni, graduate students from New York City colleges and universities, and members of the New York City community concerned about LGBTQ issues in education are invited to attend.
Directed by Elizabethe Payne, assistant professor of cultural foundations of education, the purpose of QuERI is to bridge the gap between research and practice in the teaching of LGBTQ students, and to create LGBTQ youth-affirming environments and LGBTQ youth-serving programs.
Graduate students researching in the field have been invited to share their work and engage in dialogue on the future of LGBTQ topics and programs in education. Panelists will present during the roundtable from 1-5 p.m., on Nov. 12. Abstracts can be viewed at QuERI’s new website, .
In addition to presenting their work, the panel will explore questions that address the following topics: local and federal policy, teacher training, GSAs, Safe Space programs, sexuality education, school violence intervention and institutional barriers to change.
From 6-9 p.m., QuERI will host a website launch event in recognition of the Institute’s new online presence. Michelangelo Signorile, of SiriusXM OutQ radio, will serve as the evening’s special guest host.
