Organist Chelsea Vaught will perform in a Rising Star Recital for the next presentation in Syracuse University’s Esther Drake and John Vincent Malmgren Concert Series on Sunday, Feb. 20. The recital will begin at 4 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel and is free and open to the public. Parking will be available in the Irving Garage.
Vaught will perform a program including works by Buxtehude, Bach, Brahms and Dupré.
Vaught is pursuing a doctor of musical arts degree in church music with an emphasis on organ at the University of Kansas-Lawrence. She received a bachelor of arts degree in music with emphasis in piano, organ performance and music education from Bethel College, and a master of music degree in church music and carillon performance from the University of Kansas.
She is currently the director of music/organist at First Congregational Church in Topeka, Kan. She was a quarterfinalist in the 2009-10 National Young Artists Competition in Organ Performance (NYACOP); a finalist in the 2010 Fort Wayne National Organ Competition; and won second prize in the 2010 Arthur Poister Organ Competition.
The concert is part of the Malmgren Concert Series at Hendricks Chapel. The series was made possible by a generous gift to Hendricks Chapel from alumna Esther Malmgren ’42 in 1991. The free concerts, held throughout the year, feature a wide variety of music.
Upcoming concerts in Hendricks Chapel include a Malmgren concert featuring organist Jack Mitchener (March 27) and the Hendricks Chapel Choir’s 2011 Spring Concert (April 17).
