Thanks to the efforts of more than 300 dedicated staff, faculty and student volunteers, as well as 765 generous donors, Syracuse University raised $214,300 during the 2010 United Way of Central New York campaign, a 7 percent increase over 2009, and a new record for money raised.
“I am very thankful that during these difficult economic times, the University pulled together once again to exceed our goal and support important community programs. I look forward to leading this effort next year,” says campaign vice-chair Chief Tony Callisto, director of the Department of Public Safety.
Income from special events—ranging from departmental fundraisers to the communitywide Dollar Day at the Dome—increased this year. More than 40 fundraising events, including Dollar Day at the Dome, brought in a total of $17,516.
Donors came from more than 190 areas of the University and represented every segment of the SU employee community. Almost 300 donors designated their gift to a favorite charity, while more than 330 chose to give undesignated gifts to be used where there is the greatest need.
“Thank you to those who contributed their time, effort and money to make the SU United Way campaign a success. I am very grateful for the opportunity to have served as chair of the University’s 2010 campaign. Through your efforts, SU ‘lives United,’” says chair Patricia Stith, assistant provost for equity and inclusion in Academic Affairs.
Frank Lazarski, president of United Way of CNY, commented, “What an outstanding job the Syracuse University community did this year with their annual United Way campaign! Pledging a total amount of over $200,000 and $17,000 more than last year demonstrates the willingness of the entire SU family to show their concern for those in need.”
Craig Collie, director of resource development, adds, “Literally hundreds of lives will be impacted because of contributions of time, talent and treasure through United Way. On behalf of the community, thank you, SU.”
