Three graduate student guitarists from the Eastman School of Music will be featured in a concert presented by the Great Lakes Guitar Society on Friday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m. at XL Projects, 307–313 S. Clinton St., Syracuse. The concert, which is free and open to the public, is part of a three-city tour that also includes Rochester and Buffalo.
The three guitarists—Mark Appling, Jonathan Fitzgerald and Sungmin Shin—will be performing solo works by various composers, including J.S. Bach, Leo Brouwer, Alberto Ginastera, Agustín Barrios Mangoré and Manuel Ponce. This eclectic set will display the expressive versatility of the guitar and its evocative colors. The audience can expect moments of profound lyricism, visceral intensity and much more. Highlights will include Brouwer’s “El Decameron Negro,” Ginastera’s “Sonata for guitar” and the Bach “Chaconne.”
The three performers are all currently studying at the Eastman School and serve as teaching assistants in the studio of Professor Nicholas Goluses.
The Great Lakes Guitar Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering an awareness and appreciation of the guitar and its repertoire through concerts, master classes and outreach in the Great Lakes region of the United States.
