Designer and acoustician John Storyk, principal and founding partner of (WSDG), will present a lecture on Thursday, Dec. 1, at 6:45 p.m. in the Lender Auditorium, located on the concourse level of the Martin J. Whitman School of Management. The lecture is part of the Bandier Program’s Soyars Leadership Lecture Series in the ’ (VPA) Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music. It is open to the University community.
As an aspiring musician and architecture student at Princeton and Columbia universities, Storyk followed a natural pursuit of his two favorite subjects. Forty years later, his occupational inclinations have produced the design and construction of more than 3,000 world-class audio and video production facilities, inducing recording studios, radio stations, video suites, corporate media and conference rooms, educational and entertainment facilities, clubs and theaters. His work includes private studios for Whitney Houston, Bob Marley, Tim “Timbaland” Mosley, Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls, Jay-Z, R. Kelly, Bruce Springsteen and Alicia Keys.
Storyk’s first commission was for Jimi Hendrix in 1969. That studio, Electric Lady, continues to generate hit records today in its original site in New York City’s Greenwich Village. Storyk’s more recent credits range from multi-million-dollar recording facilities in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Jazz At Lincoln Center’s performance complex; Le Poisson Rouge, a successful New York City live performance venue; studios in Argentina, Brazil, Europe and China; and Jungle City, a $6+ million-New York City “destination studio” featured in the New York Times and Vanity Fair.
Storyk is a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Audio Engineering Society (AES). He is a frequent contributor to AES convention papers and professional industry periodicals. He lectures frequently at schools throughout the nation and has established courses in acoustics at Yale University, Columbia University, New York University, Ex’Pression College, Full Sail Center and Berklee College of Music, where he is currently adjunct professor of acoustics and studio design.
