“We are proud to expand our reach into Central and Upstate New York,” says Spencer, who serves as an SU Meredith Professor; associate dean for science, mathematics and research in A&S; and executive director of SU’s Forensic and National Security Sciences Institute. “These spring concerts are always well attended and are fun for the whole family.”
The spring repertoire draws on a variety of operatic and symphonic selections, including excerpts from Puccini’s “La Boheme,” Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” and “The Marriage of Figaro” and Bernstein’s “West Side Story.” Other operatic pieces are by Handel, Rossini, Donizetti, Nicolai, Gounod, Saint-Saëns, Gilbert and Sullivan, and Wagner.
Symphonic selections include John Williams’ “Summon the Heroes”; as well as music from “The Muppet Show” and “Crimson Tide.”
SUBE features professional and dedicated amateur musicians from throughout Central New York. In addition to performing at official SU functions, SUBE presents 15-18 public concerts a year, including the award-winning “Holidays at Hendricks,” which is broadcast on WCNY-TV and radio throughout New York state and southern Canada. Distinguished composers from whom SUBE has commissioned music include Robert Ward, Arthur Frackenpohl and Joseph Downing. DVDs of the ensemble are available at the SU Bookstore.
