begins Monday, March 28, through Friday, April 1! Join the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Resource Center and the campus community to acknowledge trans visibility and fight for trans liberation, this time through the lens of prison reform.
Here is how you can get involved this Trans Week of Liberation!
Opening Ceremony for Trans Week of Liberation
Monday, March 28 | 11 a.m. – Noon | Hendricks ChapelÂ
Join the LGBTQ Resource Center in observing the loss of trans lives to hate and acknowledging the injustices queer people face everyday. We will begin by raising the trans flag outside of Hendricks Chapel followed by a talk by Rabbi Noyovitz (she/they) from Syracuse Hillel. This will be an open space for people to speak about their experiences.Â
Wednesday, March 30 | 7-8 p.m. | Schine 132
Join in a closed safe space for transgender, nonbinary, genderqueer and/or gender questioning individuals. Students who attend will read and discuss an excerpt from Eric A. Stanley’s Captive Genders: Trans Embodiment and the Prison Industrial Complex. In honor of the week’s theme, the conversation will be focused on prison reform.Â
Thursday, March 31 | 6:30-7:30 p.m. | Falk 200
The LGBTQ Resource Center will be hosting a showing of “Where Justice Ends,” a movie that delves into why so many trans people encounter the police, how these encounters often lead to discriminatory treatment and the poor conditions that trans people are often subjected to within U.S. prisons. The film considers the conditions in the U.S. prison system and the injustices within it as it pertains to trans people. The film contains real accounts from trans inmates and experts.
Thursday, March 31 | 7:30- 8:30 p.m. | Falk 200
Attend a discussion with Jennifer Love Williams (she/her) from Black and Pink, a national prison abolitionist organization that is focused on liberating queer and trans folk. This event will draw attention to how the prison system uniquely impacts trans people through an intersectional lens. Those who attend are encouraged to bring questions.
Friday, April 1 | 1-3 p.m. | Schine 132
Join the LGBTQ Resource Center to knit or crochet while venting about your week. In keeping with the week’s theme, we will be incorporating discussion surrounding prison reform and reflecting on how we can make a difference.
