From classes being online, public health guidelines in effect and our current global climate, it is important to focus on your health and wellness. It can be overwhelming trying to balance this “new-norm” that we’re living in, while also working towards being successful college students. Luckily, there are a lot of resources on campus to help! Here are eight tips and tricks to help build your health and wellness:
1. Finding fulfillment and balance between your work and academic life. For example, reaching out to professors and supervisors, taking advantage of the tutoring resources on campus and using a planner to keep track of assignments and exams.
2. Being aware of and accepting our own feelings and the feelings of our peers. Once you become conscious of your own emotional health, this can strengthen your ability to successfully cope with stress, make difficult decisions, and even handle life challenges.
3. Making sure the space you live in and spend time in is clean and organized. Take a few minutes out of your day to clean and organize your room.
4. Understanding how to manage your financial situation and setting realistic financial goals that fit your needs. Some ways to help maintain your money throughout the course of the semester is setting a weekly budget, getting a job on campus or sitting down with family members to discuss the importance of budgeting.
5. Expanding your knowledge and finding new opportunities to explore your intellectual interests and needs. Luckily, Syracuse University offers opportunities to join over 300 different clubs and student organizations. This is also a great way to meet new people who share similar interests and values as yourself.
6. Balancing your physical health and keeping your body healthy such as getting eight hours of sleep every night, developing a workout schedule, and eating a healthy diet. While it’s important to improve your physical health, it’s also important to avoid substances like alcohol and high stress levels that can negatively impact your physical wellness.
7. Next, surrounding yourself with people who make you happy and add value to your life. Social life is overwhelming sometimes, but finding your circle of people who appreciate you and make you feel belonged can help improve your social wellness.
8. Being open with yourself about your personal values and beliefs. Spiritual wellness can include taking part in volunteer work, practicing religion, and giving back to your local community.
