While many people here in the U.S. celebrated the start of a new year when the Gregorian calendar flipped from Dec. 31 to Jan. 1, as many as 2 billion people from Asian cultures around the globe joyfully observe the Lunar New Year—sometimes also known as Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival.

On Feb. 10, we will bid farewell to the Year of the Rabbit and usher in the Year of the Dragon, which according to the Chinese Zodiac represents nobility, confidence and strength. Lunar New Year celebrations last up to 16 days and can include such various customs as gathering with family, preparing traditional foods, artistic performances and the gifting of red envelopes to pass on good fortune and blessings to the younger generations.

For international students on campus looking for a little taste of home or for anyone who simply wants to celebrate a new beginning based on the lunar calendar, check out the following selection of Lunar New Year events being held on campus.

University Celebrates AAPI Heritage Month /blog/2023/03/27/university-celebrates-aapi-heritage-month/ Mon, 27 Mar 2023 17:20:25 +0000 /?p=186289 AAPI graphic

Celebrated nationally in May, Syracuse University hosts the annual Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month celebration in April so all on campus can join in honoring the histories, cultural diversity, identities and contributions of AAPI communities. Coordinated by the AAPI Heritage Month Planning Committee, with support from Multicultural Affairs, the Center for International Services and Student Living, this year’s calendar features a spanning speakers, exhibits, performances and student organization events. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Community Coming Together: Strength in Unity.”

“The theme’s concept represents our diverse AAPI community uniting across our differences and to show that we are a strong voice that can face our challenges together,” says Lia Jiening Fu Margolis ’23, a student in the School of Architecture and member of the planning committee. “Our goal is to bring together the community of folx within and allies to the AAPI diaspora through diverse cultural, educational and fun events.”

The is scheduled for Friday, March 31, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in the first floor atrium of Schine Student Center. The event will feature AAPI student organizations and campus departments tabling, Asian cuisine, a program about the month’s events, student performances and display of the annual Anti-Asian Hate Crime Exhibit. The month continues with Orange After Dark events, the featuring Sharon Lee ’14, G’15, a , a and much more. This year’s annual will also take place during AAPI Heritage Month on Sunday, April 2.

The committee will welcome Hua Hsu, a staff writer with The New Yorker and bestselling author, as this year’s on Thursday, April 20. Hsu’s memoir, “Stay True,” touches on the immigrant experience and growing up Asian American and explores grief, pop culture, being young and how friendship helps us discover who we are. Hsu weaves his story with wider questions of diversity and culture, proving that “we aren’t alone, and we never have been.” A meet-and-greet and book signing will follow the event.

“Hua Hsu is an incredible author and his newest book ‘Stay True’ encapsulates the many interwoven and complex stories and feelings of being AAPI. The memoir references the immigrant experience while also being a coming-of-age story that explores larger questions of culture and diversity,” says Margolis. “I hope attendees are inspired by seeing a fellow AAPI figure create an inclusive space for discussion about diverse experiences and find unity within an amazing community.”

Orange After Dark Transitions to Online Programming /blog/2020/04/16/orange-after-dark-transitions-to-online-programming/ Thu, 16 Apr 2020 12:04:58 +0000 /?p=153753 As Syracuse University transitions to an online learning environment, Orange After Dark (OAD) is also making the shift. OAD, the University’s late-night entertainment program organized by the Office of Student Activities, is hosting a series of events that students can enjoy wherever they are.

“Orange After Dark, whether in person or virtually, gives students a space to meet and engage with one another,” says Lorena Silva, assistant director in the Office of Student Activities. “We give students something to do so they don’t feel alone—whether that’s a Friday night on campus or if they’re experiencing that now at home.”

Screenshot of Rupple

Justin Rupple, a comedian and impressionist, entertained over 100 students at an Orange After Dark event on April 9.

The program already has seen success with its virtual programming, hosting Justin Rupple, a comedian and impressionist on Thursday, April 9. Over 100 students tuned in as Rupple did impressions, including one of Professor Snape from Harry Potter singing “Imagine” by John Lennon.

Eliza Zachowicz, a graduate intern in the Office of Student Activities, organized and attended the event. “It was hilarious. I truly enjoyed myself,” says Zachowicz. “My personal favorite was when [Rupple] performed a monologue from “Christmas Vacation” as Shrek and Donkey.”

There will be four more events this semester occurring Thursday and Friday nights, beginning at 10 p.m. Eastern time, keeping in line with traditional OAD hours.

The first event on Thursday, April 16, will feature comedy magician Trent James. James will be performing a comedic magic show via Zoom, and at the end he will teach students how to perform tricks at home.

Painting of season changing tree

Claire McKenney, a Syracuse artist, has previously led painting events for OAD, including one that featured the above painting.

On Friday, April 17, Syracuse artist Claire McKenney will teach students how to paint with available materials. All paintings can be done with a variety of tools and only using one color.

Virtual programming also brought opportunities to OAD’s lineup. For years, OAD has been interested in hosting a cooking demonstration but did not know how to make this possible for a large group on campus. Now, given the nature of video conferencing, a cooking demonstration is possible.

On Thursday, April 23, social media influencer Alexandra Catalano will host a cooking demonstration for students. The demo will feature simple, easy and tasty recipes for students to cook with Catalano and ask questions. Students will learn how to make toast three ways, sweet potato fries, egg scramble, healthy pancakes and smoothies.

Students are encouraged to for more information and to register for the events. Announcements regarding the events will also be shared on the Office of Student Activities , and accounts.

Orange After Dark Finds Mystery at the MOST on Saturday /blog/2019/09/25/orange-after-dark-finds-mystery-at-the-most-on-saturday/ Wed, 25 Sep 2019 15:01:31 +0000 /?p=147423

The Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology in downtown Syracuse.

Students will flood the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology (MOST) on Saturday night for late night programming thanks to a new partnership with the University’s program. The museum, located in downtown Syracuse, will be open especially for Syracuse University students. A $3 ticket, purchased through the Box Office in the Women’s Building, includes entry to the full museum, an interactive mystery activity, access to the planetarium shows, food and transportation.

“It’s always fun to do a new event, and it’s always exciting to introduce students to cool places in the community they might not have explored if we didn’t provide the reason and affordable option to do so,” says Courtney Jones, associate director in the Office of Student Activities.”

This new event at the MOST is a part of a newly expanded Orange After Dark that launched this fall semester. Previously, Orange After Dark hosted one to two events per weekend, in addition to the late-night movie and recreation options. The events were both on and off campus, always included food and never costed students more than $3. With those core features holding true, Orange After Dark is now providing three events per weekend through funding provided by Invest Syracuse.

“When you expand programming it’s a leap of faith,” says Jones. “As we have expanded, students continue to show up in the same numbers to even more events. We’re providing programming that is driven by students.”

As Orange After Dark searched for new partnerships in the community to add to its expanded programming, the MOST presented a perfect match. This year, the museum launched NightLAB, programming designed for adults to enjoy an evening out and explore scientific concepts while having a great time.

Simultaneously, Bea González, vice president for community engagement and special assistant to Chancellor Kent Syverud, was having regular meetings with the MOST to establish a relationship with the University and the museum, understanding how the two could work together. González soon set up a meeting between Jones and the MOST, connecting campus to community.

“I value and am enjoying the opportunity to broker my relationships and expand those relationships to involve others at the University. And to get others in the community to meet folks at the University,” says González. “Orange After Dark is a good opportunity to bring students and the community together and promote local cultural institutions while providing our students healthy, fun experiences.”

This is not the end of the MOST’s partnership with Syracuse University. Gonzalez is continually finding campus partners to connect with the community, so stay tuned.

Staff Members Leverage Passions in Late-Night Programming for Students /blog/2019/04/17/staff-members-leverage-passions-in-late-night-programming-for-students/ Wed, 17 Apr 2019 16:03:39 +0000 /?p=143671 Long after most Syracuse University employees have headed home, the work day is just revving up for others. From residence life to campus facilities, there are folks  working around the clock to make sure Syracuse University students have an unsurpassed student experience at all hours.

At the center of late-night programming are three staff members in the Division of Enrollment and the Student Experience who manage Orange After Dark (OAD), and

  • Lorena Silva, program coordinator in the Office of Student Activities;
  • Aaron Landers, programming and Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion coordinator in Recreation Services; and
  • Aaron Knighton, assistant director of late night and special events in Recreation Services.

We caught up with Silva, Knighton and Landers to find out more about their efforts to offer students fun, healthy activities during the wee hours.

Lorena Silva

Silva works nearly every Friday and Saturday night (sometimes Thursday, too) to bring free or cost-effective programming to students on and off campus. From red carpet movie premieres to snow tubing to grocery bingo to trampoline parks, OAD provides a variety of programming for students across campus. Supporting Silva is an OAD programming board, composed of student volunteers. Once on the board, students grow professionally and, most importantly to them, they find Silva. Often referred to as “mom” by the students, Silva’s mentorship and late nights with the students create the unique atmosphere that is OAD.

Aaron Landers

Landers is a self-declared “rink rat,” who finds comfort on the Zamboni or skating around Tennity. When joining Recreation Services, he had not been involved with the programming side of the rink. Now, he stays late into the night implementing multiple programs a week for students of all skating experience levels. Leveraging the existing programming and expanding options, Landers has found fulfillment in watching others experience what he and his student employees create together. Namely, every Friday and Saturday night from 9 p.m. to midnight, Recreation Services hosts Late Night at the Rink. Along with the free skate, Tennity is expanding its curling and adaptive skating sport opportunities.

Aaron Knighton

Growing up in Syracuse, Knighton always saw Syracuse University as “the dream.” Fast forward years later, he is leading the University’s recreational late night programming and special events. Late Night at the Gym offers students opportunities to play their favorite sport or learn a new activity Wednesday through Saturday from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. in Flanagan Gym. A new, exciting partnership with the Department of Athletics has given Knighton the opportunity to grow a new late night option: Late Night at the Melo Center. Students can use the basketball courts at the Melo Center for pick-up basketball on Tuesday and Thursdays from 8 to 11 p.m. Managing more than 100 student employees, Knighton focuses on investing in the professional and personal development of his students, as well as the students that attend his programs.

Joyce LaLonde, internal communications specialist; Francis DiClemente, producer; Mary Kasprzyk, editor; and Alex DeRosa, director of multimedia—all in the Division of Marketing and Communications—teamed up to tell this Staff Spotlight story.

Students, OAD Partner for a Record-Breaking ‘Black Panther’ Premiere /blog/2018/02/27/a-record-breaking-night-students-oad-partner-for-a-memorable-black-panther-premiere/ Tue, 27 Feb 2018 14:13:01 +0000 /?p=130079 several people standing on red carpet

Scheduled as one of the Orange After Dark events for the semester, the “Black Panther” movie premiere at the Regal Cinemas at Destiny was expanded to include a red carpet event for students.

As Marvel’s film “Black Panther” racks up record-breaking numbers in movie theaters across the nation, Syracuse University celebrated the movie premiere Feb. 15 with a record-breaking night of its own.

Scheduled as an Orange After Dark (OAD) event, the “Black Panther” movie premiere was the most highly anticipated event of the series. Once announced, the Office of Student Activities heard from students and student organizations across campus seeking to make the night a special one, celebrating culture, artistry and the popularity of the movie.

Through the student-led effort and co-sponsorship by Student Association, the red carpet movie premiere expanded its capacity to 1,275 students, the most ever for an OAD event, and sold out in a little over a day. The ticket proceeds from the premiere were combined with the proceeds from Cuse for Good to benefit Syracuse City schools.

Working with Student Association, Light on Ebony, National Pan-Hellenic Council, Mixtape Magazine, The Renegade Magazine and Femme Noir Magazine, the movie premiere at the Regal Cinemas at Destiny was expanded to include a red carpet event where students experienced a glamorous night. This Hollywood-like experience included students moving down the red carpet while student-led publications and students acted as paparazzi, interviewed and took pictures of the attendees.

Uche Chukwuma ’18, president of Light on Ebony, was one of the lead student organizers for the red carpet movie premiere. Reflecting on the evening’s success, Chukwuma says, “I’m so excited and I’m so happy that we were able to do this. This is a big film and to be able to rent out the entire wing of the theater is great.”

“The movie premiere was a monumental occasion for our students and campus community, and the excitement surrounding it was like no other,” says Dave Sargalski, director of the Office of Student Activities. “The OAD staff and student board members and our student organization leaders worked incredibly hard to plan and host an incredible night.”

Orange After Dark Releases Fall Schedule /blog/2017/08/30/orange-after-dark-releases-fall-schedule/ Wed, 30 Aug 2017 19:32:07 +0000 /?p=122243 Orange After Dark logoOrange After Dark (OAD), the late-night entertainment program through the Office of Student Activities, releases its fall 2017 schedule of events. Ranging from paint nights to outdoor laser tag, there are 24 OAD events throughout the fall 2017 semester open to students.

OAD has included students on its programming board since fall 2016. Simon Wechsler, a senior in the , has been on the board since its start and volunteered at events since his first year on campus. “OAD is by far my favorite program and one of my favorite aspects about SU. The programs are always amazing and every semester OAD tries to outdo itself and make the line-ups and events even more special,” says Wechsler. “OAD events really do hit all audiences here at SU. There are movie events for those who enjoy the cinema, more physical events like Black Light Dodgeball and Get Air! that are great for athletic and less athletic people alike, and there are events like escape rooms that anyone can enjoy.”

Since 2010, OAD has offered late-night entertainment to students at little to no cost. This year, old favorites such as cosmic bowling, Dave and Busters and Fright Night at the Fair will be returning. The movie premiere of “Thor: Ragnarok” at Destiny, USA and a Grit ’N Wit obstacle course on the Quad are two additions to the schedule of events this year.

“We’re excited to bring another fun-filled semester of events to students this fall. Orange After Dark is a great way for both new and returning students to connect with each other in a casual social setting,” says Courtney Jones, associate director in the Office of Student Activities.

“The programming is so amazing to me because it is all things that we as college students enjoy when we are focused on cost,” says Wechsler. “Off-campus events are $3 and this always gets students transportation to the event and usually food, and if it’s on campus then it’s free and always fun.”

In addition to the list of fall events, OAD will continue its popular late night movie viewings on Friday and Saturday nights. Movies are shown in Gifford Auditorium in Huntington Beard Crouse at 11 p.m. and are shown with open captions. Free snacks are provided. The fall schedule of late night movies can be found on the .

“There are so many reasons why students choose to come to OAD events, from the community atmosphere, the memories they create, or the fun they’re having,” says Jones. “We’d love to make every undergrad on campus a repeat attendee. “This is the second semester we are working with our new OAD Event Board, and we’re really loving watching them grow as event leaders. We’ve been able to incorporate their input into events, especially the promotions we are doing at events. It’s been fun bringing their ideas to life,” says Jones.

In addition to the list of spring events provided below, OAD will once again offer other continuous programming for students throughout the semester with Late Night Movies on Friday and Saturday evenings. Orange After Dark Celebrates 5th Anniversary /blog/2015/10/07/orange-after-dark-celebrates-5th-anniversary-51293/ Wed, 07 Oct 2015 20:30:19 +0000 /?p=85687 Orange After Dark Logo

Now in its fifth successful year of late-night programming, (OAD) has brought students cosmic bowling, a murder mystery dinner and inclusive movie screenings. And there is plenty to come in the months ahead.

“We’re really excited to bring back events that are familiar favorites as well as some diverse new events we think will appeal to many students,” says Courtney Jones, assistant director in the and coordinator of OAD programming. “We offer our off-campus events, which include transportation, for $3 and all of our on-campus offerings are free. We hope this makes it possible for even more students to take advantage of this exciting series of programming!”

Five years ago, the (ORL), with co-curricular funding from the Division of Student Affairs, organized the first pilot program of six late-night events and the venture became an immediate success. Realizing this should be a staple of the student experience, Robin Berkowitz-Smith, associate director in the Office of Residence Life, and Dave Sargalski, director of the Office of Student Activities, teamed up to ensure it would be. Each year since, many events continue to sell out and attendees number in the hundreds. Though OAD programming initially began with a lot of functions off campus, it has expanded each year to now include a number of events on campus as well. This allows for a much larger number of students to take part in these exciting opportunities to bond with one another outside of the classroom.

In the past, OAD hoped to increase the work it did with student organizations so students had a voice in the process. This year, the felt it was time to assist with that endeavor and has provided funding to enhance programming. “The Student Association placed a vote of trust in OAD this year and they didn’t disappoint; they have delivered the most robust programming schedule I’ve ever seen in a college setting,” says Phil Kramer, Student Association comptroller. “It’s bringing students together in a way little else can. The results are phenomenal.”

Thus far, fall 2015 events have included:

  • Cosmic bowling
  • Premier viewing of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”
  • Murder Mystery Dinner
  • Wonderworks
  • “Inside Out” Inclusive Screening

And what is left for fall? Plenty! (Remember that events start at 10 p.m. unless otherwise noted.)

  • “Pan” and “Steve Jobs” Movie Premieres on Thursday, Oct. 8
  • Get Air! Trampoline Park on Friday, Oct. 16
  • Dodgeball on Saturday, Oct. 17, in Flanagan Gym
  • Fright Night at the Fair on Friday, Oct. 30 (begins at 10:30 p.m.)
  • Laser Tag and Glow Golf on Friday, Nov. 6, in Flanagan Gym
  • Ropes Course and Bubble Soccer on Saturday, Nov. 7, in Flanagan Gym
  • Dave & Buster’s on Thursday, Nov. 12 (begins at 10:30 p.m.), at Destiny USA
  • Broomball on Friday, Nov. 13, at Tennity Ice Pavilion
  • “Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt.2” Premiere on Thursday, Nov. 19 (10:30 p.m.), Destiny USA’s Regal Cinemas
  • Ben Seidman Comedy Magician on Friday, Dec. 4, in Schine Underground
  • Pancake Breakfast “Stressbuster” on Sunday, Dec. 13, in Schine Dining

In addition to the list of events above, OAD offers other continuous programming for students throughout the semester. Through a partnership with , the Midnight Movie Series provides screenings of some of the year’s best Hollywood blockbusters. Movies are shown in Gifford Auditorium on Saturdays at 11:30 p.m.

Additionally, through collaboration with , Late Night at the Gym is in full swing, running until Dec. 12. This means that students are able to visit Archbold, Flanagan and Women’s Building gyms, along with the Tennity Ice Pavilion, from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m to participate in some exciting and diverse activities. This semester’s list includes: open volleyball, meditation relaxation, salsa and merengue, yoga, indoor soccer, open recreation and, of course, ice skating. Best of all, all activities are free.

The full list of events can be accessed by visiting the . The complete schedule of can be found online.

OAD is excited about a new, easy way for students to get updated information about all events. You can now download the SU Guides App to access the OAD Guide with full event details and ticket information.

Orange After Dark: Something to Do When ‘There’s Nothing to Do’ /blog/2014/10/13/orange-after-dark-something-to-do-when-theres-nothing-to-do-46385/ Mon, 13 Oct 2014 21:00:39 +0000 /?p=72499 Late night programs and events for Syracuse University students come together courtesy of Orange After Dark.

Late night programs and events for Syracuse University students come together courtesy of Orange After Dark.

When Robin Berkowitz-Smith was an undergraduate at Syracuse University, she remembers hearing students say, “There’s nothing to do.” Almost 30 years later Berkowitz-Smith, now associate director of residence life at SU, still hears the same refrain.

A student negotiates the ropes course at Destiny USA's WonderWorks.

A student negotiates the ropes course at Destiny USA’s WonderWorks.

About four years ago, the Office of Residence Life and the Division of Student Affairs decided to do something about it. That was when a committee was formed to provide some safe, alternative late-night activities for students.

“People were skeptical,” she says. “We knew it had to be entertaining, something the students wanted to do. It also had to have some regularity to it, so the students could plan.”

The committee put together a pilot program of six late-night activities over the course of a semester, and got co-curricular funding from the Division of Student Affairs. And thus was born Orange After Dark.

The activities that first semester included things like a trip to the water park at Greek Peak, a local movie premiere and bowling. They all sold out, with about 200 students at each event. The only one that didn’t seem to strike the right note, and wasn’t repeated, was a semiformal.

The pilot program showed there was a desire for activities like these, so Orange After Dark was made a permanent program under the Division of Student Affairs. Berkowitz-Smith and Dave Sargalski, director for student engagement in the Office of Students Activities, took on the task of running it.

Four years on, Orange After Dark is a smashing success. The program puts on an event about every other week during the fall and spring semesters. Water park trips, movie premieres and bowling are still part of the mix, along with trips to WonderWorks at Destiny USA, Fright Night at the Fair, Funny Bones Comedy Club, Howe Caverns and other places. Each trip accommodates 200-800 students, and all are sold out. Each venue is shut down to the public for the evening, accommodating just the SU students.

All events run on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night, and most start at 10 p.m. or later. (Some start earlier because of the time it takes to transport students to the venue.) Most events don’t end before 1 or 2 a.m. There are a couple of big draws. One is that the activities take place off campus, and give students a chance to go places they wouldn’t normally go. Perhaps the biggest attraction is that each activity costs just $3.

“Orange After Dark has made an outstanding contribution to the University and has been able to serve every student that may feel bored on a weekend night,” says Kevin Gonzalez, an accounting and finance student in the Whitman School of Management. “Through Orange After Dark, students are able to have fun, meet new people and also experience new things while not spending a lot of money.”

While the main aim of OAD has been just to provide some fun alternative activities, the surveys that students fill out after taking part show that it accomplishes other purposes as well. Nineteen percent of attendees say they come to meet people, and most of those say it works. Gonzalez says he met his best friends through OAD activities.

Almost all (98 percent) of the students who go to OAD activities report that it was fun. So much fun that many go back again. And while 35 percent of OAD attendees are freshmen, the group isn’t made up of just those new to campus—13 percent are seniors.

Berkowitz-Smith would like to see Orange After Dark continue to grow. The fact that the activities continue to sell out show that there is a hunger for the types of things they are providing, she says. One of the roadblocks to this is that many venues can’t accommodate larger groups; but OAD may be able to grow by scheduling more frequent events, she says, perhaps more than one session of the same event. Another thing she would like to see in the future is more late-night activities, such as movies, offered on campus. “That way the students would have more of a choice,” she says.

OADstatsfinalOne thing that might have to happen in order for Orange After Dark to grow, however, is for it to develop a sustainable structure that is dedicated just to the program. Right now, Berkowitz-Smith and Sargalski run it in addition to their very busy full-time jobs.

There will probably never be a time when no student says, “There’s nothing to do.” But Orange After Dark has at least made that cry a little less frequent.
