MBA Program Ranked No. 1 Private School Nationally by Bloomberg for Return on Investment /blog/2024/08/02/mba-program-ranked-no-1-private-school-nationally-by-bloomberg-for-return-on-investment/ Fri, 02 Aug 2024 18:12:14 +0000 /?p=201816 The Martin J. Whitman School of Management’s MBA program is now ranked No. 1 nationally among private universities for its return on investment (ROI) by Bloomberg. The also has the second-highest ROI among all schools in the U.S.

According to Bloomberg, its new, innovativehelps students determine whether pursuing an MBA is a financially viable path, and, if so, what are the best choices available to them. They based this on full-time MBA programs in the U.S.

The ROI calculator helps students make this decision using a standard measure of financial success: profit relative to initial principal, or ROI, built on the data reported to Bloomberg from surveys distributed for annual rankings. The calculator, which advances Bloomberg’s efforts to help potential MBA students make the best decision they can, is accompanied by reporting that considers the factors increasingly recognized as an important part of this assessment — though not easily quantifiable.

Whether or not an MBA will increase their earnings is a big concern for prospective students, since that is often a main reason for pursuing an MBA. The ROI Calculator demonstrates that the Whitman program does provide that return on investment, with an ROI of 22%. This is based on median cost (tuition and expenses), interest, net forgone income and the total MBA investment.

“Prospective MBA students often emphasize that ROI is crucial when selecting a business school,” says Mary Collier, Whitman’s executive director of graduate recruitment. “That’s why providing an exceptional educational experience and maximizing ROI for our students is a top priority at Whitman. We are delighted that our dedicated efforts have earned us the No. 1 national ranking among private schools for ROI among MBA programs. At Whitman, we embrace a holistic approach to student success with a strong focus on achieving outstanding career outcomes.”

“Whitman is thrilled to once again be recognized as an outstanding investment for our students to pursue an MBA,” says Interim Dean Alex McKelvie. “Return on investment should be one of the main criteria for anyone considering an MBA, and our No. 1 national ranking for private schools and No. 2 overall reflects Whitman’s emphasis on high-quality education, personal touches, outstanding student experience, leveraging the strong Syracuse University network and our commitment to our students’ career success. It is these factors that really translate into this ROI measure. We are pleased that the student-focused investments into our MBA program are paying off for our MBA graduates.”

Whitman School Online MBA Program Highly Ranked in 2024 Princeton Review /blog/2024/07/19/whitman-school-online-mba-program-highly-ranked-in-2024-princeton-review/ Fri, 19 Jul 2024 17:32:19 +0000 /?p=201548 The Martin J. Whitman School of Management was prominently featured in The Princeton Review’s , and the program is ranked No. 21 among the Top 50 schools. In 2023, Whitman’s online MBA program was ranked No. 40.

The ranking is based on a combination of institutional and student survey data, including career outcomes, technological infrastructure, academic rigor, cost and affordability, among others. The survey also incorporates student opinions that The Princeton Review collected through its online MBA student survey and institutional data reported by administrators at the business schools. This year, the data reflects surveys of administrators at 165 business schools offering online MBAs and more than 10,700 online MBA students.

According to The Princeton Review, online MBA programs have become as rigorous as their on-campus counterparts. For many business school candidates, an online degree might even be the smarter choice. Online programs offer flexibility, affordability, access to innovative technologies, students from a diverse career backgrounds and global opportunities.

Here are some of the highlights of what Whitman students said:

  • The online MBA program provides “a solid educational and professional core,” “online interaction with classmates and the professor” and “flexibility of an online format instead of going part time attending classroom lectures.”
  • The school also offers immersion events “so that online students still have the opportunity to network with their peers.” This makes them feel as though they are “a part of the institution and not just a number.”
  • The majority of topics cover “current business practices and can be applied to current business problems.” While the amount of work can be “a lot to manage,” according to many students, “the way the classes are laid out makes it very easy for students to access, since there are many different days and hours students are able to choose from to accommodate their own work schedules.”
  • The asynchronous and synchronous classes “are often taught by two different people.” This often “helps students hear the same information in two different ways.” Supplementary “resources and videos” are also provided as extra support.
  • Discussions in class are “always thought-provoking” due to classmates who are “driven, intelligent and strive for excellence.”

“We are very happy to once again have validation of our programs from an outside rankings organization. This continues our school’s upward trajectory for being recognized as providing a highly valuable educational experience,” says Alex McKelvie, interim dean of the Whitman School. “We also appreciate the comments on the student-focused part of our program. Whitman has continuously concentrated on the online students’ experience, and we appreciate them highlighting this aspect.”

“This is the second ranking survey where students have highlighted the academic experience we provide. Whitman achieved an overall ranking of No. 29 this fall in the Poets&Quants ranking of online MBA programs. Recent alumni ranked us No. 15 overall on academic experience. Of particular note was alumni satisfaction with live synchronous classes (ranked No. 10 nationally) and professor quality (ranked No. 7 nationally),” says Amy McHale, assistant dean for graduate programs at Whitman.

Maxwell School Ranks No. 1 for Public Affairs in 2024 /blog/2023/04/25/maxwell-school-ranks-no-1-for-public-affairs-in-2024/ Tue, 25 Apr 2023 14:02:56 +0000 /?p=187540 Maxwell School named 2024 U.S. News Best Grad Schools for Public Affairs Syracuse University’s is ranked No. 1 overall in a survey of its peers and is highly ranked in 10 subspecialties, according to the 2024 . The school has received the top honor in 12 of the 13 years in which the peer surveys have been conducted; this year, the honor is shared with Indiana University’s O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

“The challenges facing communities across the globe are increasingly complex and interconnected. We see this in the economic and educational aftershocks of the pandemic and the threats to infrastructure, security and climate justice created by a warming planet,” says David M. Van Slyke, dean of the Maxwell School. “Now more than ever the world needs adaptable leaders who are engaged across diverse people, issue areas and interests. We know that no ranking provides a complete picture of performance; but we are proud to be among the schools being recognized by our peers for this work, and we look forward to our continued good work together.”

The Best Public Affairs Schools rankings are based solely on surveys of deans, directors and department chairs representing 269 ٱ’s programs in public affairs and administration. Each school is numerically ranked by peer school leadership on a 5-point scale, with the average score determining the school’s overall rank. Additionally, survey respondents can nominate up to 15 schools for excellence in 12 subspecialties, with the number of nominations determining each school’s position in the ranking. Unlike rankings for other disciplines, the public affairs ranking does not look at performance indicator inputs (such as test scores) or outputs (such as hiring salaries).

This year, the Maxwell School is highly ranked across ten subspecialty categories, including:

  • Public Management and Leadership
  • Nonprofit Management
  • Public Finance and Budgeting
  • Public Policy Analysis
  • Local Government Management
  • International Global Policy and Administration
  • Environmental Policy and Management
  • Social Policy
  • Urban Policy
  • Information and Technology Management

“For anyone looking to make a difference in the community—locally, regionally, domestically or internationally—there’s a Maxwell program to fuel your passion and develop your effectiveness,” says Colleen Heflin, associate dean, chair and professor of public administration and international affairs. “We measure our success by the important work our graduates do as leaders in the fields of public policy, public administration and international affairs; the recognition and renown of our faculty members in their fields of expertise; and the vibrancy of our academic environment, including our students, who come from a wide variety of backgrounds, cultures and areas of interest.”

Central to the school’s growth is its continued investment in diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility—in both its learning and research environments and in its public impact. The Maxwell School is home to that work to shed light on a range of issues, including environmental sustainability; autonomous systems policy; population health and aging; law and security; conflict resolution; democracy and journalism; global affairs; regional studies; and more.

Among Maxwell’s newest research centers is in Washington, D.C., a joint effort with the S.I. Newhouse School for Public Communications to promote nonpartisan, evidence-based research and to convene civic dialogue around polarizing issues. The institute is led by veteran journalist Margaret Talev, who joined the University as Kramer Director in January 2023.

Also joining the Maxwell community this semester as director of the is computer and cognitive sciences expert Hamid Ekbia, who has been appointed University Professor in the Maxwell School. Meanwhile, the , home to the new Policy Design Studio, launched last year under the leadership of its founding director Saba Siddiki, associate professor of public administration and international affairs. The center helps public service leaders evaluate the effectiveness of their policies and promotes stakeholder engagement in the policy design process.

“The Maxwell community strives every day to make a public impact with our teaching, research and applied work. The school’s excellence is fueled by the creativity and talent of its faculty, students and staff, as well as the continued support of its global alumni,” says Van Slyke. “They are what has made it such a special place to work, learn and study for 99 years, and what propels us into the future.”

Poets&Quants Ranks Whitman’s Undergraduate Program No. 34 Second Year in a Row /blog/2023/03/09/poetsquants-ranks-whitmans-undergraduate-program-no-34-second-year-in-a-row/ Thu, 09 Mar 2023 15:06:50 +0000 /?p=185704 The is ranked No. 34 in the nation for its undergraduate program by Poets&Quants. Whitman’s ranking held steady from last year, establishing it as a top 35 national program.

Poets&Quants’ ranking is based on three components, weighted equally (33.3% each):

  • The quality and diversity of students enrolling in a program
  • The quality of the experience of the students (based on the feedback of young alumni)
  • The career placement outcomes of graduating students

According to Nathan Allen, staff writer at Poets&Quants, the 2023 ranking of undergraduate business schools resulted from significant time and effort in putting together a fair and thorough approach. Admission standards, the academic experience and employment outcomes from data specific to each business program — not the overall university it is attached to – were equally weighed. That is an important distinction because gathering such information as average SAT scores and starting salaries and bonuses, among other things, is not readily available anywhere else. Admission standards, an assessment of the academic experience, and employment outcomes of a business program are critical factors in the quality of the educational experience. These facts validate the ranking prospective students and parents use in determining the best schools to apply to.

“We are very proud of this latest achievement for Whitman. Our consistent No. 34 ranking is based on making solid progress in all key areas of Whitman’s undergraduate program. In addition, we have matched our highest ranking to date, which is a significant achievement. Our peer and aspirational schools are also investing in these areas,” says Alex McKelvie, interim dean of the Whitman School.

Poets&Quants’ ranking continues to reflect Whitman’s areas of emphasis, such as ensuring that it brings in highly-talented and diverse students and strengthening the academic experience through curricular innovations and experiential learning programming.

Whitman’s career services team facilitated a 96%placement rate six months after graduation for the Class of 2022 — Whitman’s highest placement rate and starting salary on record. McKelvie adds, “This shows that Whitman graduates are in high demand and that we have helped our students attain outstanding positions to launch their careers. We had a great entering class this year in terms of size, academic quality and diversity. Our alumni also provided positive feedback on their academic and co-curricular experiences at Whitman.”

Whitman’s Full-Time MBA Program Achieves Highest U.S. News Ranking Since 1998 /blog/2022/03/29/whitmans-full-time-mba-program-achieves-highest-u-s-news-ranking-since-1998/ Tue, 29 Mar 2022 14:25:25 +0000 /?p=175070 The Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University is now ranked No. 57 in the nation for its by U.S. News & World Report. This is the highest ranking for the Whitman School since 1998 and is an improvement from its No. 84 ranking last year.

The U.S. News & World Report rankings methodology relies on three main categories, Quality Assessment (40%), Placement Success (35%) and Student Selectivity (25%). The Whitman School saw increases in two out of three of those categories for 2023.

“We are extremely proud of this latest achievement for our school. Our move to No. 57 is largely based on the strength of our admissions, curricular and co-curricular innovation, and placement efforts. We capitalized on student interest and were successful at attracting a very select class of graduate students,” says Dean Eugene Anderson. “Our career services team was able to facilitate an 87% placement rate at three months for the Class of 2021 versus 60% for the previous year’s graduates. Our reputation as a top school for MBA education among our peer schools and recruiters also remains high.”

Syracuse University Ranked Among the Nation’s Best Online Bachelor’s Programs by U.S. News & World Report /blog/2022/02/14/syracuse-university-ranked-among-the-nations-best-online-bachelors-programs-by-u-s-news-world-report/ Mon, 14 Feb 2022 21:47:30 +0000 /?p=173502 In only its second year of eligibility, Syracuse University has ranked as one of the top universities in the nation when it comes to online undergraduate education, according to U.S. News & World Report’s .

Syracuse University has ranked as one of the top universities in the nation when it comes to online undergraduate education, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Syracuse University’s AACSB-accredited business management degree, which represents a partnership between the College of Professional Studies and the Whitman School of Management, is ranked No. 8 in Best Online Bachelor’s in Business Programs, while Syracuse University additionally earned ranked spots for Best Online Bachelor’s Programs (No. 59) and Best Online Bachelor’s Programs for Veterans (No. 40).

“The recognition of our online bachelor’s programs is exceptional, given that our first year of eligibility to be ranked was 2021. Our online business management degree launched in fall 2021 and was immediately recognized as a top-10 program,” says Michael Frasciello, dean of the College of Professional Studies.

Syracuse University currently offers 10 market-sensitive online undergraduate degrees, as well as eight online undergraduate credit certificates. “As our online undergraduate portfolio grows to meet current and emerging career and industry needs, we will remain focused on delivering a differentiated, accessible and high-quality online student experience,” says Frasciello.

The student experience starts with high-touch admissions advising, to include financial aid counseling. Syracuse University’s high rate of acceptance and selectivity (two key criteria in the U.S. News ranking methodology) are a function of the University’s approach to online student success. During admissions counseling, inadmissible students are encouraged to enroll as non-matriculated students. Under the guidance and support of dedicated student success advisors, these students complete one to three courses as non-matriculated students, demonstrating to themselves and to the University that they can succeed and grow at Syracuse University. They are then encouraged to formally apply, bringing their credits forward into their degree plan.

“Our holistic treatment of the entire online student experience is validated by the U.S. News rankings,” says Frasciello. “We do not limit our definition of the online student experience to the course environment. We engage the student as a learner outside of the course space beginning when they first inquire about our programs.”

The University’s top 40 ranking as Best Online Bachelor’s Programs for Veterans is a recognition of Syracuse University’s commitment to being the best school for veterans, active military and military-connected students. Syracuse is the only R1 private university in the Northeast that offers online and residential part-time undergraduate study to active-duty military, guard and reservists at their respective tuition assistance (TA) rates beyond the member’s annual benefit. This means active-duty and reserve students pay no more than $250 per credit (or the current DoD TA rate) after they expend their annual TA allotment.

Whitman’s Undergraduate Program Achieves Highest Rankings Yet /blog/2022/02/10/whitmans-undergraduate-program-achieves-highest-rankings-yet/ Thu, 10 Feb 2022 20:58:21 +0000 /?p=173442 The at Syracuse University is now ranked No. 34 in the nation for its undergraduate program by Poets & Quants. This is the highest ranking the Whitman School has received from Poets & Quants, and an improvement from its No. 48 ranking last year. Whitman’s previous highest rank was No. 43 in 2020.

The Poets & Quants’ rankings methodology relies on three categories equally relating to Admissions Standards, Employment Outcomes at Graduation and Academic Experience based on a survey of young alumni. In each of these categories, Whitman was rated higher than in all previous years.

“We are very proud of this latest achievement for our school. Our move to No. 34 is largely based on the strength of our admissions and placement efforts,” says Dean Eugene Anderson. “We capitalized on a surge of prospective student interest during the past two years, and our career services team was able to facilitate a 90% placement rate at three months for the Class of 2021 versus 77% for the previous year’s graduates. Our recent alumni also provided positive feedback on ‘significant experiences’ such as meaningful global immersion and the wide variety of experiential learning opportunities we offer. While rankings are imperfect, they’re also important and moving up in a relatively well-regarded poll is a nice affirmation of the great work that Whitman is doing.”

“These rankings accurately reflect our school’s areas of emphasis such as ensuring that we bring in highly talented and diverse students, strengthening the academic experience through curricular innovations and co-curricular programming like the Goodman IMPRESS program, and helping students acquire jobs aligned with their career goals. These rankings thereby reflect the great team effort of the faculty and staff at Whitman in earning this new accolade,” says Alexander McKelvie, associate dean for undergraduate and ٱ’s education and professor of entrepreneurship.

Syracuse Architecture’s M.S. Program Ranked Among the Best in the World /blog/2019/10/11/syracuse-architectures-m-s-program-ranked-among-the-best-in-the-world/ Fri, 11 Oct 2019 12:38:02 +0000 /?p=147908 aerial shot of architecture students and faculty

The M.S. in architecture program’s class of 2018 thesis review.

Syracuse Architecture’s master of science (M.S.) in architecture program has been selected as the No. 22 (No. 7 in the U.S.) by Best Architecture Masters (BAM).

The Spain-based independent research platform selected 30 universities around the world from the best architecture schools in the to be compared and evaluated for the 2019 edition of its annual ranking.

BAM’s team of experts evaluated each school based on focused on quality and internationality of faculty, alumni and postgraduate program. Other essential variables for a program to be considered prestigious—such as relation with other universities, teaching approach, job opportunities and networking, publications and facilities—were also taken into account.

“Thanks to this methodology we are able to establish criteria to effectively and objectively compare study plans that, despite being different, are focused on the academic development of better architects,” notes BAM.

With a points, Syracuse Architecture’s M.S. in architecture program tied for the No. 22 spot alongside Universidade de São Paulo’s master in architectural design.

Under the leadership of , assistant professor and coordinator of the M.S. program, Syracuse Architecture’s Design | Energy | Futures research and design program has built a strong, global reputation since its inception in 2015.

Specifically targeted to individuals holding a professional degree in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design or urban planning, the program has attracted a diverse population of students from nearly a dozen countries over the past five years and at least one Fulbright Scholar each year.

The 30-credit-hour, three-semester concentrated curriculum is structured around a highly focused core of coursework including studios, research seminars and a capstone research and design project that collectively expand upon students’ architectural knowledge of energy and the built environment.

At the heart of the program, students are able to embrace the complex multi-disciplinary nature of architecture in the 21st century by exploring individual research and design interests supported by and from across the University and around the world.

“Our M.S. program aims to build the integration between design and research, and the bridge between academia and industry,” says Wang.

Student projects ranging across many scales—from urban design to high-performance buildings, from VR and computational simulation to material research and product design—have been recognized in the academy and industry and have won numerous international design and research awards including: second place in the Low Carbon City Future Center design competition (2015), winner of the Joan B. Calambokidis Innovation in Masonry Competition (2017), second place in (2018) and third place in the (2019).

“Every one of my studios has been exhibited and published,” says Wang, whose students have displayed their design proposals in top exhibitions worldwide such as the Shenzhen Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture (2017), Venice Architecture Biennale (2018) and Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism (2019).

Helping to strengthen Syracuse Architecture’s ,’ Wang has also worked to expand the geographical reach of the job market beyond the U.S. by creating a network of internship and employment opportunities at top architecture offices in Asia for graduates. Students in the Design | Energy | Futures program have been successfully placed at AECOM, Perkins Eastman and URBANUS, among others.

“The M.S. in architecture program has been a great success,” says School of Architecture Dean Michael Speaks. “Building on that success, we are launching another master of science in architecture program next fall in New York City focused on real estate development. The curriculum and programming of the Syracuse Architecture NYC program at the Fisher Center, which includes approximately 30 undergraduate students each semester, has focused on real estate the last four years. With the support of the Fetner Family Initiative, the program has expanded and is now providing a variety of experiential learning opportunities to Syracuse Architecture and Whitman School students. The new, real estate-focused M.S. program will compliment and augment work we are already doing at the Fisher Center, and provide students interested in sustainable, resilient real estate development an opportunity to work on research and projects in collaboration with architecture and real estate firms in the city.”

Syracuse University Retains Top-Tier Research Ranking in Latest Carnegie Classification /blog/2018/12/19/syracuse-university-retains-top-tier-research-ranking-in-latest-carnegie-classification/ Wed, 19 Dec 2018 17:10:44 +0000 /?p=139829 Syracuse University has once again earned a position in the top tier for research activity among all doctoral universities in the nation, according to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Included among 120 R1 doctoral universities, Syracuse University continues to demonstrate a commitment to internationally recognized research and achievement of the goals set out in its academic strategic plan.

Students in research lab“The research enterprise is essential to Syracuse University’s aspiration to be recognized internationally as a student-focused and globally relevant center for discovery and innovation,” says Vice Chancellor and Provost Michele Wheatly. “By continuing to focus on and invest in faculty, graduate and undergraduate research, we are attracting the best and the brightest to our campus, building research capabilities in key areas and advancing our academic strategic plan. I am grateful to all those who contributed in some way to securing our position on this most prestigious list.”

The R1 distinction is an indicator of “very high research activity” and is based on an examination of 2016-2017 data. Criteria for research activity includes such factors as research and development expenditures, research staff and number of doctoral conferrals. Syracuse University is one of only 34 private doctoral universities classified as R1.

Vice President for Research John Liu says the R1 distinction remains a critical affirmation of the University’s commitment to scholarship, creativity and innovation. “It acknowledges the impressive work that our faculty are already doing and inspires us to continue to build on the momentum by investing in new research activity and in our focus on the importance of relevant research in the hiring of faculty scholars.”

Stephen Masiclat, professor of new media management in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and chair of the Senate Research Committee, says the retention of the R1 classification is the result of a great deal of work done across the University.

“In the Faculty Senate Research Committee, we’ve seen the leadership of our Vice President of Research John Liu in new research initiatives like the CUSE Grants and the new post-doctoral hiring program. We’ve also seen eager participation in new efforts across the campus to enlarge the research enterprise—from the new undergraduate research office to the campuswide cluster hires in exciting new areas. Retaining our R1 ranking is great news, but it’s no surprise.”

Jamie Winders, professor and chair of geography in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and the former chair of the Senate Research Committee, echoed Masiclat’s sentiment.

“Retaining R1 status is great for all parts of our campus, especially our students. We know that hands-on research opportunities have profound impacts on both graduate and undergraduate students. R1 status recognizes the centrality of the research mission to all that we do at Syracuse University, including our work with students,” says Winders.

The Carnegie Classification, created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and first published in 1973, is the widely accepted industry standard for classifying schools by higher education researchers and others. The U.S. Department of Education and many higher education associations use the classifications to organize data as well as determine a school’s eligibility for grant money. The classifications are also used by U.S. News & World Report in grouping institutions by type for its popular Best Colleges rankings guide.

Their great service to our country is most appreciated and there will always be a place for them at Syracuse University.”

The Best for Vets: Colleges 2019 rankings are an editorially independent news project that evaluates the many factors that help make colleges and universities a good fit for service members, veterans and their families to include academic outcomes, veteran culture on campus, support services, special policies and accommodations and financial incentives. Military Times also considers data from the departments of Veterans Affairs, Defense and Education. Roughly 500 colleges took part in this year’s survey with just 137 making the list.

Syracuse University was recently named by Military Times as the #1 private school for military veterans.

“It is a great honor to accept this award, and an even greater honor to enroll and support veterans. Their experience and skills serve them extremely well in engineering and computer science disciplines. We are firmly committed to aligning our college with the needs and aspirations of veterans today and in the future,” says Dean Teresa A. Dahlberg.

The College of Engineering and Computer Science is part of a campus that has a strong reputation and tradition for supporting veterans. Military Times recently named Syracuse University the #1 private school in the country, #3 overall for service members, military veterans and their families.

During the past two years, Syracuse University has worked hard to create a class-leading campus community in support of the nation’s veterans and their families. In this period, the University has seen veteran and military-connected enrollment double; more than $1.2 million has been raised for scholarships and other assistance for student veterans and ROTC cadets; and the ROTC program has grown to its highest enrollment levels in almost a decade.

The University will further its commitment to veterans and their families with the construction of the National Veterans Resource Complex (NVRC), a first-of-its-kind multi-use facility dedicated to advancing academic research, programming and community-connected innovation serving the social, economic and wellness concerns of the nation’s veterans and families. The NVRC will build upon and advance Syracuse University’s already strong national leadership in the veterans’ community, and serve as the center of veteran life on the campus of Syracuse University, in the local community and across Central New York.

Syracuse University Jumps into Top Research Tier in New Carnegie Classifications /blog/2016/02/08/syracuse-university-jumps-into-top-research-tier-in-new-carnegie-classifications-51145/ Mon, 08 Feb 2016 16:06:23 +0000 /?p=90838 asdfasdfasdf

Syracuse has moved from an “R2” designation to an “R1” designation, denoting “highest research activity,” in the 2015 Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

Syracuse University has moved into the top tier for research activity among all doctoral universities in the nation, according to the recently released 2015 Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

In the new rankings, which are issued twice a decade, Syracuse moved from an “R2” designation in 2010, denoting a “higher research activity,” to an R1 designation, which is the top research class a university can be awarded. The distinction is based on an examination of recent data that helps Carnegie analysts gauge research activity as compared with other doctoral institutions. Criteria for research activity includes such factors as research and development expenditures, research staff and number of doctoral conferrals.

Syracuse was one of 15 universities nationwide to move from R2 into the top category in the latest rankings.

“Earning this classification is powerful recognition of our efforts to grow and expand research” says Syracuse University Interim Provost Liz Liddy. “We have already identified research and discovery as a key focus area in our academic strategic plan, and this is one more step in the right direction. I am proud of my colleagues across all of the schools and colleges and look forward to many future accomplishments.”

Interim Vice President for Research Peter Vanable says this distinction is a strong affirmation of faculty scholarship. “It acknowledges the great work that our faculty are already doing” says Vanable. “This is a proud moment, but there is much more we can do to effectively build on this momentum, and we plan on doing just that.”

News and World Report in grouping institutions by type for its popular Best Colleges rankings guide.

The Carnegie Classification defines its doctoral grouping as those institutions that awarded at least 20 research/scholarship doctorates in 2013-14. Professional practice doctoral degrees, such as juris doctors, did not count toward that total.

This year, a total of 335 institutions were classified as doctoral. Within that doctoral grouping, institutions were further classified as R1 (highest research activity), R2 (higher research activity) and R3 (moderate research activity).

Military Times Places Whitman in Top 30 ‘Best for Vets’ Biz School Rankings /blog/2013/03/22/military-times-places-whitman-in-top-30-best-for-vets-biz-school-rankings/ Fri, 22 Mar 2013 19:58:39 +0000 /?p=50139 whitmanvets

The Martin J. Whitman School of Management has been ranked #26 by Military Times on its inaugural list of Best for Vets: Business Schools, the publication recently announced. The results are published in the March 2013 issue of Military Times EDGE.

Editors evaluated responses to a 60-question survey completed by 100 business schools, which included questions regarding academic policies, financial aid, academic and career support, academic success, campus culture and selectivity. The Best for Vets: Business Schools rankings also took into consideration each school’s answers to the Military Times’ previous survey of colleges and universities, the results of which were published in November 2012.

Since 1952, Whitman has offered educational programs serving military members and veterans. The (DCP) was founded in response to financial problems identified during World War II. More than 1,600 military and civilian personnel have attended the program and graduates have risen to the highest ranks of financial management in the Department of Defense (DOD).

Because various branches of the government have a growing need for individuals who understand and can develop, manage and lead the complex integration of goods, services and distribution in a variety of tactical situations, the Whitman School offers a (LOGTECH iMS). This competitive, limited-residency program provides its graduates—both active duty and civilian personnel—with a clear competitive advantage in the ability to strategically align critical supply chain support services with vital tactical objectives that meet DOD goals and objectives.

Additional educational opportunities for military and civilian personnel at Whitman include the (ACC), the (ECC), the (SRMC), and .

“This ranking is due recognition of the more than 60 years we have been collaborating with the Department of Defense in the delivery of financial management education to military and DOD civilians. I feel it’s a privilege to be a part of this enduring and important program as we continue to partner in preparing our future financial management leaders for the challenges ahead,” says Irma P. Finocchiaro, director of executive education and defense programs at the Whitman School.

In 2007, Barnes Professor of Entrepreneurship and former U.S. Air Force officer Mike Haynie worked with Whitman Dean Melvin T. Stith, a Vietnam veteran, to leverage the school’s faculty and top-ranked entrepreneurship programs to empower America’s veterans with disabilities to secure their own economic freedom in the most American way possible—through self-employment. As a result, the social venture the (EBV) was born.

The EBV offers self-employment career training, education and job creation for post-9/11 veterans with service-connected disabilities. It is now offered through a national consortium of eight world-class schools that includes Texas A&M, Purdue, UCLA, UConn, Louisiana State, Florida State and Cornell, with SU serving as national host. More than 600 veterans have graduated from the program, with more than 670 new jobs created as a result of their ventures.

In 2010, the school’s portfolio of veteran entrepreneurship training programs further expanded to serve military family members , female veterans and National Guard and Reserve members with the addition of (EBV-F), (V-WISE) and . EBV-F leverages flexibilities inherent in small business ownership to provide a vocational and economic path forward for military family members and/or surviving spouses of those who gave their lives in service to the country. V-WISE is available to female veterans of all service eras and branches, military spouses and transitioning active duty service members with a passion for and interest in starting or growing a small business; more than 500 have taken part in programs across the country since its inception. Endure & Grow is an online training experience for National Guard and Reserve members and their families focused on the fundamentals of launching and/or growing a small business.

In 2011, the University made a larger, institutional commitment to veterans and military families, building on its storied role of educating veterans since World War II, by forming the (IVMF) with founding partner JPMorgan Chase & Co. Haynie was appointed executive director and founder, and the IVMF now operates the portfolio of veteran entrepreneurship training programs founded at Whitman.

The IVMF maintains deep ties with the Whitman School. Dean Stith serves as an inaugural advisory board member, Whitman faculty donate their time as instructors for the self-employment training programs and Whitman undergraduate and graduate students work at the IVMF as interns and research assistants, among other collaborations.

“I am thrilled with the Military Times recognition of Whitman as a first-ever top 30 ‘Best for Vets’ business school. The veteran entrepreneurship training programs founded at Whitman are a true testament to the school’s mission, our University commitment to veterans and military families and the enduring legacy of Dean Stith’s leadership,” says Haynie.

Whitman School’s MBA program ranked #55 by Bloomberg Businessweek /blog/2012/11/16/whitman-schools-mba-program-ranked-55-by-bloomberg-businessweek/ Fri, 16 Nov 2012 14:50:48 +0000 /?p=44708 whitmanThe at Syracuse University earned the #55 spot in Bloomberg Businessweek’s biennial ranking of top MBA programs. The ranking, now in its 24th year, includes 81 schools globally.

“We’re very pleased that Bloomberg Businessweek has ranked Whitman as one of the top MBA programs in the country,” says Whitman School Dean Melvin Stith. “I am proud to note that this recognition is due to the tireless commitment and dedication of the entire Whitman community. I am confident that our ongoing efforts to improve will continue to move this momentum forward.”

“We are thrilled to be ranked by Businessweek, but not entirely surprised. We work hard to create and maintain a relevant and challenging curriculum, and foster a learning environment that produces well-prepared, well-rounded business leaders,” says Don Harter, Whitman’s associate dean for master’s programs. “We’re very happy to be recognized in this way.”

Bloomberg also recently ranked Whitman’s MBA program #1 for the most global student body in the U.S. Earlier this year, US News &World Report ranked Whitman’s MBA program as one of the nation’s lowest-priced private university MBA programs, at #9 out of more than 400 schools surveyed. Overall, US News ranks Whitman #16 in entrepreneurship, #25 in supply chain management, and the MBA program #68 nationally.

The top 30 U.S. schools and top 10 international programs are highlighted in the Nov. 19-25 print issue of Bloomberg Businessweek, and the complete ranking of full-time MBA programs is featured on Businessweek.com at www.businessweek.com/articles/2012-11-15/the-complete-2012-business-schools-ranking.

The Bloomberg Businessweek ranking is based on three elements: a survey of newly minted MBAs, a poll of corporate recruiters and an evaluation of faculty research output. The MBA survey, which measures satisfaction with all aspects of the b-school experience, is combined with two previous MBA surveys. The corporate poll, which asks recruiters to identify the schools that produce the best graduates, is also combined with two previous recruiter surveys. Finally, Bloomberg Businessweek tallies the number of articles published by each school’s faculty in 20 top journals and reviews of their books in three national publications. The total for faculty size is then adjusted and an intellectual-capital rating is assigned for each school. The MBA surveys and the recruiter polls each contribute 45 percent to the final ranking, with the intellectual-capital ranking contributing the final 10 percent.

Whitman’s MBA program incorporates both the theoretical background and practical experience students need to succeed in today’s ever-changing global economy. The program’s experiential learning component encourages students to apply classroom learning to business problems, connect with decision makers, and deliver tangible results that add value to sponsoring organizations. Students build an experiential portfolio through internships, consulting, specialized courses, community engagement and other practical experiences that make them more valuable in the marketplace. The Class of 2012’s mean base salary was $72,119.
